How do societal gender stereotypes affect you?
    11/16/2008, 7:27am

Me being a teen mom, society stereotypes about gender affect me because they feel that females should not be having sex in the first place, especially at a young age. It affects me when people call me names because I have sex, but no one says anything to the boy that got me pregnant.

Hmm, I guess it affects me because I am told to “act appropriate” or “act proper” like a girl should and when I don’t, I am called a tomboy. And when my mom tells me I need to act more girly, it hurts my self-esteem.

It affects me because when I don’t fit into the stereotype, I’ve been called all kinds of bad names before and it hurts. It breaks my self-esteem down.

I have been called a tomboy and butch because I do not fit the idea of girly-ness. I also have been called a hoe or slut just because I have a lot of guy friends. But people do not understand that they are just friend and I grew up with them. It does'nt make sense that females cant have male friends after we are teens.

I have experienced some verbal abuse and physical abuse for things I have done that do not fit the stereotype of ladylike

The way men treat us when we don’t act the way society says we should. It affects us ladies, girls, and teens when we don’t follow the rules like being a virgin and dressing girly. We are treated like trash by people when we are different (like being pregnant).

The society affects us because men can get away with almost everything but women can’t because we are expected to be in the home (to cook, clean, take care of kids). We are supposed to dress up, have nice hair, and wear make-up, stay virgins until marriage. But times have changed and we don’t want to act like that anymore.
